Before the coffee. Before the scrolling. Before the day begins pulling at the edges of your energy, there is a quiet space. A window of time where you're mind is just emerging from sleep. I used to immediately think of all the things I wished to do or hoped to accomplish that day. Bake bread. Do the laundry. Go to the gym. Order groceries. That type of stuff. It took me a long time to realize that this is not healthy. At least not for me. I was full of stress and anxiety the second my eyes opened.
I have trained myself to hold up a mental stop sign when this process begins. Instead of creating a to-do list, I choose to listen and breathe. I hear the sound of the birds outside, my cat purring beside me, the dog snoring at my feed, the shades clattering against the window frame from morning air streaming in... even the occasional car with emission problems loudly driving past. It's the noise of my current reality. I soak it up, breathe, and whisper my gratitude for all these things. This 5 minute sacred pause has become a ritual that reminds me of who I am and why I’m here.

When I finally emerge from bed and grab my coffee, I sit with my tarot deck in my office space where I am most comfortable, with an open and receptive heart. I say thank you — to God for the love and life force running through my veins with every heart beat and breath, to Mother Earth whose energy and resources are a warm embrace around me every minute of every day, to the spirit guides and guardian angels who cheer me on every single moment. I imagine they laugh at me sometimes, but always with love and good humor. They are my biggest fans. I ask them to send me any messages they might have for me that day, through the deck I am shuffling in my hands. That's when the magic happens.
Why Morning Tarot Matters
Morning tarot is a conversation. You don’t need to be an expert reader or remember every symbol on every card. All you need is presence and trust.
Tarot holds up a mirror — not of the future, but of your current energetic frequency. It reflects where you are, what wants to be seen, and how you can soften into the day ahead with a little more grace.
Even just one card can whisper what your spirit needs to hear. A reminder to be patient. A nudge to speak up. Or even message to rest, even while the world spins wildly. I've had them all.
How to Create Your Own Morning Practice
1. Ground first. Speak your gratitude. Feel your heartbeat and breathe. Sit up straight and imagine all of your chakras are open and receptive. If you have questions, ask them.
2. Choose a positive space. I prefer my office because it exudes an energy of creativity, acceptance, and love. Choose a space that helps you feel that way. I always have my Himalayan salt lamp on my desk set to a low glow. It helps the mood!

3. Call in support. Invite your spirit team: God, ancestors, angels, higher self. Say it out loud or silently. I often say, “Thank you for loving me. Please guide me with clarity and kindness today.”
4. Shuffle with intention. As you shuffle the deck, focus on a question or leave it open for any message your spirit family would like for you to receive. Let the cards emerge and trust what shows up.
5. Pull 1-3 cards. Don’t overthink it. One card might be enough. Don't spend your whole morning shuffling. If there is a message for you it will come in quickly. I typically never shuffle more than 5 times. As the cards emerge, look for symbols, colors, repetition. Sit with the cards, breathe, and listen to what your intuition is telling you that they mean.
If use a traditional Rider-Waite tarot deck, but whatever style of deck you choose, be sure to let your intuition speak before the guidebook does.
6. Close the space. Thank your spirit family. Turn down the salt lamp. Return the cards with love to wherever you store them. Sometimes I wrap mine in a linen tarot cloth and set them on the window sill to observe the days light.
You Don’t Need to Know Everything
If you’re new to tarot, you might worry: Am I doing it wrong? The truth is there is no wrong way to commune with your spirit. Tarot is a language, but the dialect is uniquely yours. You don’t need a degree to pull a card and let it speak. Just begin. The cards will meet you where you are.
Tarot as a Self-Love Practice
The more consistently I practice this morning ritual, the more rooted I feel in myself. It’s become a form of spiritual hygiene: Grounding, Coffee, Tarot, Gym, Shower.
Don't overcomplicate getting started. Clear a little space. Light your salt lamp (or candle or sit in the dark). Pull one card. Let that be enough.
